the person
her planet
Her name comes from the Greek “kosmos,” which means order, the ordered universe, the whole arrangement of things. Chaos is formlessness, and kosmos is the world set in its proper order, with the heavens turning as one. Sailor Cosmos is not tied to a single planet or a single light. The entire sky of the far future is gathered into this one senshi. She is Sailor Moon in her final form, and she no longer stands for one world but for the ordered whole of all of them.
profile
Beyond the seven wanderers lies the eighth sphere, the countless fixed lights that tradition held to be the backdrop of all fate, all the heavens, against which every smaller destiny is written. Sailor Cosmos rules no single planet. She keeps the whole starfield. She is an ethereal senshi, mostly white, and the entire cosmos is folded into her. She comes down from a distant future to stand at the last battle of all.
In the manga she is hidden inside a small, strange child. Through the Stars arc a little girl who can only say “Chibi Chibi” stays at Usagi’s side, and nobody can explain her. Only at the very end does she let her true shape be seen. She is Usagi herself, Sailor Moon grown over an immense span of time into the highest form the guardian can take.
Cosmos is great in stature, and she is sorrowful. She says that she came back because she once failed. Faced with the ultimate battle against Chaos at the source of all life, she despaired and fled, and she has carried that flight with her through the ages. She comes to the final battle in search of something she lost. She hopes to find again the courage that her own younger self still has.
The fixed stars bring weight as well as glory, all of fate pressing on a single heart. Cosmos keeps the whole sky, and she is afraid. She has seen how the story can end, and she ran from it. She comes back to watch her past self stand where she could not, and she already knows how much it will cost.
Cosmos is redeemed when she watches Usagi refuse despair and choose hope at the edge of the abyss. She is given back the thing she abandoned, and she can go back to her own far future without running any more. Her redemption is complete. She is what Sailor Moon becomes.
All of this belongs to the manga. In the anime the mysterious child is Chibi Chibi and nothing grander, an embodiment of the Light of Hope and not a future Sailor Moon, so Sailor Cosmos as such never appears on screen. She exists most fully on the page, as the sorrowful guardian of the entire cosmos.
how the fixed stars shine through
A fixed star is a light that does not move, and Cosmos answers to the whole field of them. She comes from the far end of the sky and the far end of time, and she looks at the wheel from outside rather than from somewhere inside it. She enters as the smallest person in the story, a child who can only say her own name. She belongs to no one, yet she is attached to Usagi, and nobody can give a reason for it.
She is Usagi’s own ultimate future. She is the guardian who reached this same last battle at the end of everything, despaired and ran, and has carried that failure back through time with her. She already has all the power there is, so power is not what redeems her. She is redeemed by watching her younger self stand at the edge of the Cauldron and refuse to despair. From outside the wheel she sees the chart whole, every part at once, including the parts that failed, and she learns that it is not fixed. She goes home to her distant future no longer the guardian who ran.
