the person
her planet
JunJun (ジュンジュン) is her circus name and Sailor Juno is her guardian name. Both come from the asteroid Juno, which is named for the Roman goddess Juno, the Greek Hera, queen of the gods and keeper of marriage and sworn bonds. Her sisters carry the softer asteroids of nurture, play and fire, and JunJun answers to the queen’s asteroid, whose meaning is a vow kept. Her circus name follows the same doubled pattern as the rest of the Quartet, with one syllable repeated (Jun + Jun), and her senshi name turns it back into a single Juno.
profile
JunJun is the acrobat of the Amazoness Quartet and the most physical of the four. CereCere poses, PallaPalla dreams and VesVes prowls, and JunJun is the one who moves, quick, green and full of mischief. She trusts her body before she trusts anything else. For a long stretch of the Dead Moon story she is all motion and has no one worth being loyal to.
Juno is the asteroid of the marriage goddess and of the bond we pledge and swear to keep. It is easy to read that only as romance. JunJun’s vow is to a team, to her sisters and, once she remembers it, to Chibiusa. She is the one in the Quartet who keeps the bond. Her devotion is physical and unglamorous, and she is loyal in the way of someone who will put her body between you and whatever is coming for you and not make a speech about it.
The queen’s asteroid also has a shadow side, the jealousy and betrayal that come with a broken bond. In the Dead Moon arc JunJun and her sisters serve Zirconia. Their bond is misplaced, and they are sworn to a queen who was only ever using them. Later her pledge is taken out of the wrong hands and set where it belongs, and the devotion that made her a good servant makes her a great guardian.
In the athletic sense she is the tomboy of the group. Her colour is green, a growing, restless, forward colour, and she is a girl who cannot be told to wait. She is bold enough to get herself into trouble and then get herself back out of it, quick to take a dare and quicker to come to the rescue. Once JunJun decides you are hers, she does not let go.
Juno is the asteroid of the bond that is kept. The circus tumbler and the marriage-goddess senshi are the same person seen two ways. The manga makes this literal by waking her as Sailor Juno, an asteroid senshi born to guard the small princess across the centuries. In the anime the same thing shows when the Quartet finally choose each other over Zirconia. In both versions JunJun keeps the bond.
how Juno shines through
Juno is the asteroid of the sworn bond. It covers commitment, partnership, the vow and what it costs to keep one, and its subject is who you are for, rather than who you are.
JunJun is the green acrobat of the Quartet, and she arrives with nobody worth being loyal to. She lounges on a crystal ball. She runs targets down for the pleasure of the chase, then hangs back and lets a Lemures do the work, with the bored confidence of a girl who has never lost a fight. On paper her loyalty is to Zirconia, and it is worth nothing. She senses this before she can put a name to it, as a growing suspicion that she is being spent and not trusted.
The Amazon Stones come off, the guardian sleeping inside the servant wakes, and she rises as Sailor Juno. The first thing she does with a name of her own is give it away. She swears herself to the small princess she had been hunting a chapter earlier. She is as fast as she always was, and now her speed belongs to somebody. In the last war she spends it on Chibiusa’s defence without needing to be asked twice.
