Her name, Kakyuu 火球, is written with hi 火 ‘fire’ and kyuu 球 ‘ball’ or ‘sphere’, so it reads literally as ‘fireball’, which is what the English epithet Princess Fireball preserves. She is a sovereign, and light and flame are bound up with everything about her. She rules a star and hides within a living flame. Her guardians think of her as a single warm point of fire, and they search for her across the dark.

profile

Of the old lights of the sky, the fixed stars were set apart from the seven wanderers. They did not roam, and so they were trusted to signify brilliance, fame, fate and a singular radiance that stayed put while everything else moved. A fixed star is a light that people navigate by. Princess Kakyuu is the distant sovereign of her own system, at the edge of the known sky.

The first thing anyone notices in her is warmth. She stays serene when others panic, and she is graceful under a weight that would break most rulers. She is wise, as someone who has watched her own world burn and chosen hope anyway. A signature floral fragrance travels with her and lingers after she has gone. Her guardians recognise their princess by that scent as much as by sight.

The fixed stars bear fate, and their light outlasts the ruin of the ground beneath them. Kakyuu’s homeworld, the flowering star of her people, was destroyed by Sailor Galaxia in the long war that hollowed out the galaxy. Kakyuu did not die with it. She fled and carried the light of her star out into the dark. What she carries is continuity more than power. While she still lives, her world is not finished.

The three who serve her, the Sailor Starlights, orient themselves by her. Scattered and grieving, they cross the sky looking for one particular light, and her distant shining is what gives their search a direction. She is someone to rescue, but for them she is more a bearing to be found. She is the home they are steering back to, even while they cannot see her yet.

Kakyuu rules her own far system, and a whole people once looked to her. When she is revealed and reunited with her Starlights, she rejoins the fight and changes how it is understood. She names the true stakes of Galaxia’s hunger and the origin of every star’s light, and with that her allies can at last see the shape of the danger they are in.

In the doctrine of the fixed stars, what is fixed is fate. Kakyuu spends her light and falls to Galaxia, as so many stars fell, but the light is not lost. When the darkness at the galaxy’s heart is undone and its keeper redeemed, Kakyuu is reborn and her star is rekindled, and her people have their world back. She is still what she always was, distant and dependable.

how a fixed star shines through

Each fixed star is the sun of some other system. It may not be the brightest thing in everyone’s sky, but a handful of people turn around it. Kakyuu’s whole system has been burned out from under her. Galaxia takes Kinmoku, and Kakyuu does not go down with her world. She carries its light away into the dark. She arrives small, as a living flame inside a little incense burner carried by a child, while three guardians comb a foreign city for a trace of her fragrance and cannot find her.

Stepping out of the flame means becoming visible to Galaxia, and she does it anyway. The first thing she does once she has a body is teach. She names the real stakes of the war, the star seeds and the Cauldron where every light in the galaxy is made. Then she is struck down and her seed is taken, and it is given back when Chaos is undone. She goes home to be the centre of her people again.

her signature fragranceA distinctive floral scent goes with the princess wherever she goes and lingers where she has been. It works almost as her identity. Her Starlights track her by it and know her by it, and it tells them she is near long before she is revealed. It is the perfume of her flowering star.

the flame vesselIn the anime, Kakyuu survives Kinmoku’s fall by hiding within a small living flame. The flame is kept in an incense burner, and Chibi Chibi carries it through the arc. Kakyuu waits there unseen, as a single small light, until she can safely take form again.
her sailor crystal, the light of KinmokuAs Sailor Kakyuu she bears her own sailor crystal, the true star seed and core of Kinmoku. Galaxia wants it, and it outlasts her. When Chaos is undone, the crystal is rekindled, and both the princess and her world are restored.
