Haruka Tenou is tall and cool, keeps her hands in her pockets, and is a champion behind the wheel of a race car. Her family name, 天王 (Tenou), means “heaven-king” or “sky-king”, and 天王星 (Tennousei) is the Japanese name of the planet Uranus. Her given name, はるか (Haruka), means “distant”, so together it reads as the far sky-king. She’s so easily taken for a handsome young man that half the cast falls for her, and she doesn’t correct them. Michiru, Sailor Neptune, is her girlfriend, and the one person she won’t sacrifice.
Haruka puts the mission first. She keeps watch at the far edge of the solar system and is willing to be the villain and trade a few lives for the world, which is where she and Usagi clash. Over the story she learns that Sailor Moon’s mercy is a different kind of strength, and she chooses to serve it.

significations
- individuality
- individualistic, peculiar, otheredThe one who will not fit the category, and is not trying to. Uranus is read as whatever the settled arrangement has no room for, so its meaning keeps moving: what is eccentric in one decade is unremarkable in the next.It shows up as the one who does not explain themselves, who keeps an arrangement worked out privately rather than one handed down, and who gets read as strange for it long before anyone reads them as early.
- defiance
- rebellion, and questioning authorityRebellion and the questioning of authority, the political kind and the personal kind. Uranus is the moment an arrangement stops being obeyed, and the planet does not first ask whether the authority deserved it.It shows up as refusing to defer, as taking a position against the very people one is meant to follow, and as a willingness to be the difficult one rather than go along with it.
- rupture
- sudden change, with no warningThe break that comes without notice: whatever arrives early and out of order, which is why the writers reach for lightning every time. The glass ceiling belongs here too. Nobody schedules the moment it goes.It shows up as the decision taken alone and acted on at once, with everyone else finding out from the far side of it, and as the kind of break that cannot be put back the way it was.
- freedom
- the refusal to be ownedWhere Saturn builds the limit, Uranus is what will not sit inside it. This is where the modern list begins, and it is the planet of the thing that gets loose. It shows up as speed, distance and an exit left open: the refusal to be owned by a place, a role or a person, and a preference for moving over being held.

trans-saturnian
Uranus isn’t one of the seven planets Hellenistic astrology reads. Those are the lights you can follow by eye, from the Moon out to Saturn, and they’re what two thousand years of astrology was written about. Uranus was only found in 1781, so it was never in anyone’s sky while that writing was being done.
Modern astrology gave it Aquarius, Haruka’s own Sun sign, which the tradition gives to Saturn. That is the pattern rather than the exception: the moderns didn’t find new meanings past the edge of the old sky so much as move meanings that already had an owner. This site reads the outer three as generational rather than personal, and leaves the rulerships where the tradition put them. When one of them does come to a placement, though, it is felt as hard as any of the seven.

powers and transformations

a note on sources
This profile is written from the ANIME page, which is the one available here. The manga material below the anime column is from general knowledge and is thinner than it should be. It will be filled in properly when the manga page is to hand.
The broad difference is the usual one. The anime gives her a whole season of screen time and two attacks, and the manga gives her less time and more moves.
her and Michiru
They are lovers, and Takeuchi confirmed it on the record at the 1998 San Diego convention when a fan asked her directly. The first English dub rewrote them as very close cousins, so that version of the show has two cousins who behave like a couple while nobody remarks on it.
In the Stars season they sell their souls to Galaxia in episode 197 so they can stay together, kill Pluto and Saturn for their star seeds, and then turn on Galaxia. It is the most divisive thing either of them does.
the English dub
Haruka becomes Amara Tenoh. The dub also softens her gender presentation. In the original it is a deliberate and consistent part of the character and is not a joke.
