mercury is the mind at work. it is language, thinking, counting, the quick traffic of information between one thing and another. where the sun is who you are and the moon is what you feel, mercury is how you take it all in, sort it, name it, and pass it along. it is the planet of translation, the one that carries a message from here to there; and because it is always carrying something that belongs to someone else, it takes on the colour of whatever it stands next to.

what mercury does

when valens lists what falls under mercury, you can hear the whole shape of it. education, writing, speech, argument, interpretation, the office of the herald: everything to do with words. then numbers, calculation, commerce, banking, the market: everything to do with counting. it rules brothers and younger siblings. it rules theft and cleverness both, which fits a god who, as an infant, stole apollo’s cattle and talked his way out of it. and then a huge, sprawling list of trades, because mercury is not this or that craft; it is skill itself, the trained hand and the trained mind. in the body it takes the hands, the shoulders, the fingers, the tongue. the through-line is simple: mercury is the messenger, the translator, the mind moving information between people and between things.

the common one

mercury is neither benefic nor malefic. it is the neutral planet, the one hellenistic astrology calls “common,” and it becomes whatever it keeps company with. sitting near jupiter or venus, it turns helpful; sitting near mars or saturn, it turns harmful. that is very mercury. it does not arrive with a fixed temperament of its own; it reads the room and adapts.

day mercury and night mercury

mercury has no fixed sect either. it joins the day team when it rises before the sun, as a morning star, and it joins the night team when it sets after the sun, as an evening star. so its temperature depends entirely on where it sits relative to the sun. one more thing lives out here, and it is the single piece of this planet everyone has heard of: mercury retrograde. it gets blamed for a great deal. the codex has a page on what it actually means, which is quieter and more useful than the reputation.

where it is strong, where it struggles

mercury rules two signs. gemini is the quick, curious mind, many things at once, restless and connective. virgo is the precise, analytical mind, the craftsman sorting detail from detail. and mercury is uniquely exalted in virgo too, the only planet at home and exalted in the same sign. its detriment and fall land in sagittarius and pisces, the signs of the big picture, where a mind built for detail can lose the thread of the whole.

how to actually read it

to read someone’s mercury, look at the sign it is in; whether it is a morning or evening star; the company it keeps; whether it is angular; and whether it is retrograde. each of those bends the meaning. keywords are where you start. condition is where you actually read.

the twinkling one

the greeks called it stilbōn, the twinkling one, for the way it flickers close to the sun and is hard to catch. the god behind it is hermes, the roman mercury: messenger of the gods, guide of souls between worlds, patron of merchants and thieves alike.

its guardian in the wing

the guardian here is sailor mercury, ami mizuno, the quiet genius who reads the situation, names what is happening, and hands the answer to someone else to act on. she is the friendly face of mercury as the mind at work.

where this comes from

most of this rests on valens and on the way chris brennan teaches it. i am paraphrasing a living tradition, not quoting it.

that is mercury: the mind in motion.

it is one of seven. want to learn the whole sky from the ground up? i teach a beginner’s course.
