sect: day or night? it's that simple

you don't even need to look at a chart for this one. in fact, you almost certainly already know this one. it's as simple as day or night.

was the sun up when you were born?

that's it. that's the whole question.

the line

go look out a window. find where the sky meets the ground... that line is the horizon. it's not just where the sun rises, it's where everything we can see in the sky rises. and it's the single most important line in a birth chart.

so: was the sun above that line when you were born, or below it?

• above = daytime = you've got a day chart.
• below = nighttime = a night chart.

yes. that simple. congratulations!

in a way this is almost intuitive. people born in the daylight carry a different energy than people born in the dark. it makes sense. but a birth chart has so many other moving parts that this simple thing usually gets blown out of the water before anyone even mentions it.

the technical name for it is sect, and it's the oldest division in the whole system. before dignity, before aspects, before any of the fancy stuff... you ask which half of the day someone showed up in.

why anyone cares

day or night decides which team you're batting for. which planets are on your side, and who your team captain is.

so here's the starting lineup:

this only gets a little tricky for those folks born at dusk or dawn. at that point, an accurate birth time is all the more important.

each team has a slightly different play style:

saturn in a day chart is a fundamentally different kind of teacher than saturn in a night chart. same planet, same sign, same degree... completely different temperament. day-chart saturn is the stern-but-fair teacher. night-chart saturn is the one that actually scares people.

and it's true for all of them. every planet performs differently depending on which team is the "home team" and which is the away team. the sun and the moon have very different ideas about how you win... and they run their teams to match.

two positions on the field are worth knowing by name, because they do the most work in a reading.

the helpful planet whose team is home is called the benefic of the sect... jupiter in a day chart, venus in a night chart. wherever it's sitting is a genuinely good part of your life. it's the first place i look when someone needs somewhere to stand.

and the difficult planet playing away is the malefic contrary to sect... mars in a day chart, saturn in a night chart. that one's usually the hardest thing in the chart, and also, more often than not, where somebody ended up genuinely good at something.

so what do you do with it

so yeah... it really can be this simple. even if you only ever look at the team captains, they'll tell you a lot about a person.

next time you read anything about your mars... a horoscope, an app, a post, whatever... ask whether the person writing it even knew if you were born in the daytime. if they didn't, they were describing half of you and guessing at the rest.

and the same line does double duty. that horizon doesn't just tell you day or night... whatever sign was climbing over it at your birth minute becomes your rising sign, and the whole chart gets built out from there. → what's actually rising?
