Kou Seiya is written 星野光. The surname Kou 光 means ‘light,’ and all three of the Lights share it. The given name Seiya 星野 is built on 星, the character for ‘star.’ Read together, the idol’s name puts light and star side by side in two words. Seiya is a senshi from a distant star. On Earth she is a pop idol, and her work is standing in the stage lights so that a lost princess, somewhere, might see her and come home.

profile

The fixed stars sit beyond the orbits of the seven wandering planets, and the old astrologers held them apart from everything that drifts. They were the emblems of brilliance, fame and fate. Each is a single point that does not move, and together they seem to hold the whole sky in place. Sailor Star Fighter is a star senshi from Kinmoku. She is not one of this solar system’s guardians, and she comes to Earth from somewhere outside the reach of the sun and its planets.

To search a strange world, she becomes an idol and the centre of the Three Lights, and she performs under stadium spotlights to screaming crowds. The other senshi keep their power secret. Star Fighter makes herself as famous as she can and sells tickets, because she hopes fame on that scale might reach one person who has been lost. The stage career is her disguise, and it is also the way she searches.

She has a hot temper. She is bold and cocky, she grins easily and is quick to challenge people, and she carries herself as the front of the group and its nerve. Under the swagger she is lonely. She is admired, and she is a long way from home. Everything she does on Earth is done in exile, with her world burned and her princess missing, and she is grieving. She is fierce because she has already lost almost everything and will not lose the rest.

Fighter’s bond with Usagi runs through the whole arc. Mamoru is gone and cannot be reached. Usagi longs for him, Fighter has a longing of her own, and the two answer each other. Something like love grows between them, and Seiya speaks of it more openly than any senshi before her. It stays one-sided and gentle. In the end, what Fighter gives Usagi is guidance, and she does not try to possess her.

Her story differs between the two continuities. In the Sailor Moon Sailor Stars anime, Seiya and the others are men in their civilian lives as the Three Lights, and they become women when they transform into the Sailor Starlights. In Naoko Takeuchi’s manga they are women throughout, and they only disguise themselves as men so they can move unnoticed while they search. Each version is canon in its own medium. The anime puts much more weight on the romance between Seiya and Usagi than the manga does.

When Galaxia falls and Kinmoku can be rebuilt, Fighter and the other two Starlights go home. The farewell is meant to be bittersweet. For one season Fighter was a large part of Usagi’s life, and now she leaves and goes back to her own distant place. She has not changed, and she is not forgotten. The world she returns to will need rebuilding.

how a fixed star shines through

A fixed star does not wander across the sky the way a planet does, and it belongs to no solar system except its own. Where it touches a chart it works by direct contact, and it is bright, fated and out of place. It does not join the pattern the planets make. Seiya comes from another system and has nowhere to be here. She performs under stage lamps in a borrowed shape and searches a world that has no room in it for her. Her swagger is a disguise, and so is her fame.

Over the arc she becomes willing to be seen without the costume. She sees her own exile in a girl who longs for someone she cannot reach, and her teasing turns into something plain and protective. In the anime it comes close to a confession that she already knows cannot succeed. The manga leaves the romance out and keeps the rest. There she is a soldier who keeps her distance because her world has already been burned. She fights beside Sailor Moon, wins, and leaves a world she was never going to be part of, taking her princess home to rebuild Kinmoku.

Fighter Star Power broochStar Fighter’s star-shaped transformation brooch, raised with the call ‘Fighter Star Power, Make Up.’ In the anime it changes Seiya from a young man of the Three Lights into the leather-clad woman warrior Sailor Star Fighter. In the manga it arms a fighter who was a woman all along. In both versions it turns a hidden idol into a star senshi of Kinmoku.watch it in the show →

star seed / sailor crystalThe true light at the core of a life, and the thing Galaxia’s hunt is meant to steal. The Starlights are senshi born from star seeds beyond the solar system, and for them a sailor crystal is both their power and their fate. The old astrologers spoke of the fixed stars as far lights that burn on their own.
the microphone and the Three LightsFighter’s civilian tool is fame. As the centre of the idol group the Three Lights, Seiya uses a microphone and a spotlight where another senshi would use a weapon. She sings across a whole planet in the hope that Princess Kakyuu will hear the signal and answer. The pop career is how the mission is carried out.
