the person
her planet
Kou Taiki is written 大気光. The family name Kou 光 means “light,” and all three Starlights share it, so every Kou is a kind of star. The given name Taiki 大気 can evoke “atmosphere” or “the great air,” the wide open sky. Read together, the name comes out as something like “the great light of the air,” a light high up and far off. The character is written as distant and thoughtful. She is cool and clear-headed, and a little out of reach.
profile
The old astrologers set the fixed stars beyond the seven wandering planets. They are far lights that never drift from their places and never lose their brilliance, and they signify fame, fate and a singular brightness that owes nothing to the sun. Each of the inner Guardians has a planet, close by and always turning. Sailor Star Maker comes from outside the solar system. Reason guides her, and she keeps other people at a great and deliberate distance.
The site takes the manga as primary. In the manga, Star Maker is a woman of the ruined planet Kinmoku and one of the three Sailor Starlights sworn to Princess Kakyuu. She comes to Earth already a soldier, and she disguises herself as a man in the idol trio the Three Lights only so that she can keep searching without being seen. She is the tall, quiet, watchful one. She watches the Guardians of Earth with a scientist’s reserve, and she is not convinced that hope is a strategy.
The anime tells it with a more literal split, and the site keeps both continuities in view. In the anime, Taiki is a young man as a civilian, calm and intellectual, and he becomes a woman when he transforms into Sailor Star Maker. Both versions show the same character from different angles, and in both she does not change herself to suit the company she is in.
Taiki is the intellect of the trio. She is drawn to science and to poetry, and she treats both as ways of finding order in the unknown. Her clarity of mind can look like coldness. She is the slowest of the three to trust Earth’s dreamers, and the most likely to ask what a wish is worth when it is set against the size of the galaxy. She is also the last to admit that she has been moved.
Taiki is moved all the same. It happens through kinship, and nobody argues her into it. She finds a mind like her own in Ami Mizuno of Mercury, the most studious of the Guardians, and she shows a kindness she does not advertise when a young admirer’s sincerity gets past her guard. Warming to humanity does not make her any less distant. She learns that reason and hope were never opposites.
When Princess Kakyuu is found at last and the war with Galaxia is over, Star Maker goes home to Kinmoku to rebuild what was burned. She is still herself when she leaves, brilliant and self-possessed and ruled by reason. She comes from beyond the seven wanderers and turns toward Earth for a short time, and then she goes back to her own place in the sky.
how a fixed star shines through
In the old texts the fixed stars are cold. They are brilliant and remote, and they are indifferent to what happens to the people beneath them. They do not rule anything. They work by contact, touching one thing directly. Of the three Starlights, Taiki is the coldest. She takes a stage and a false shape because a broadcast is the most efficient way to search a planet, and she treats Earth’s optimism as an error in reasoning. To her, Usagi’s faith in hoping is a category mistake. She is not cruel about it. She cannot see what the belief is for.
Taiki is warmed by contact. A young admirer’s plain sincerity gets past her reserve, and an intellectual kinship with Mercury does the rest. By the time Kakyuu rises out of the incense burner and the Starlights kneel, Taiki has conceded that hope works here, even though she cannot derive it. Then she leaves with her princess to rebuild a burned world.
