jupiter is increase. it is abundance, growth, generosity; the greater benefic, the planet that makes things bigger and, more often than not, better. where another planet asks a small question, jupiter answers on a large scale, and what it mostly says is yes.

what jupiter does
here is what valens hands us, and it reads like a list of blessings. jupiter governs the begetting of children and childbirth. it brings abundance, profits, large gifts, wealth, and the stewardship of it all. it gives knowledge, justice, authority, government, high office and honors. it makes friendship with great men, alliances, and brotherhood. and it grants freedom, release from bonds, relief from bad things, and the confirmation of good things. in the body it rules the thighs and the feet, and so, valens says, athletic contests.
the through-line is easy to feel: jupiter is expansion and benefaction. it is the planet of more, of blessing, of the door that opens.
the greater benefic
there are two benefics, jupiter and venus, and jupiter is the greater of them. where venus refines and sweetens, jupiter enlarges. it is the planet with the strongest power to say yes, to affirm and amplify what the other planets are already reaching for. but hold onto this: bigger is not always better. an unchecked jupiter can promise more than it delivers, or pour its blessing over the wrong thing entirely. abundance is only good when it lands somewhere good.
day jupiter and night jupiter
jupiter plays for the day team in sect. a jupiter in a day chart is in sect, at its most generous and its most lucky; a jupiter in a night chart is out of sect, still a benefic, still kind, but a little less reliable about it. this is why the day/night question matters even for the good planets. a benefic in its own half of the sky is simply more itself.
where it is strong, where it struggles
jupiter rules sagittarius, the seeker and the philosopher, always looking to the far horizon, and pisces, faith and mercy and the whole ocean of feeling. it is exalted in cancer, a generosity that nourishes and feeds. it falls into detriment in gemini and virgo, the homes of mercury, where the big picture gets lost in the small detail. and it has its fall in capricorn, where limit and restraint cramp everything expansive about it. jupiter wants room, and capricorn is the sign that draws the line.
how to actually read it
when you find jupiter in a chart, walk through it in order. what sign is it in, and how does that color its generosity. is it in sect, day or night. what company does it keep, which planets does it touch and get touched by. and its angularity, is it up on an angle where it can act, or tucked away where it can only wish. keywords are where you start. condition is where you actually read.
the radiant one
the greek name is phaethōn, the radiant one. the god is zeus, the roman jupiter, king of the gods, the thunderer and the giver of law. it is a fitting owner for the planet of more: the one who sits at the top of the sky and hands things down.
its guardian in the wing
the guardian here is sailor jupiter, makoto kino, the tallest and the strongest of them, who calls down thunder and grows things with her hands. she is the friendly face of jupiter as strength, abundance, and open-handed generosity; big-hearted, protective, and glad to share.
where this comes from
the bones of this come from valens and from chris brennan, who taught me most of how i read it. i am paraphrasing a living tradition, not quoting it.
that is jupiter: the door that opens.
it is one of seven. want to learn the whole sky from the ground up? i teach a beginner’s course.
