Makoto Kino is the tall new girl who was thrown out of her last school for fighting, with a reputation for delinquency she never earned, and Juuban keeps its distance. Her family name, 木野 (Kino), is wood plus field, “of the wood”, and 木 is also the first character of 木星 (Mokusei), the Wood Star, which ties her to her planet and to her power over green and growing things. Her given name, 誠 (Makoto), means “sincerity”, and under the tough-girl surface she’s plain and honest. Her parents died in a plane crash when she was young, and she has looked after herself ever since.

Jupiter is the greater benefic, the planet of expansion and surplus, and its people tend to be big in frame and bigger in generosity. Abundance with no one to spend it on turns into hunger. Makoto arrives with all of that surplus and nobody to give it to, and once there’s a team she’s both its muscle and its kitchen.

A slim antenna extends from the jewel of her tiara to draw the storm down before she looses it. It is best known from Supreme Thunder. It makes her a lightning rod and is the clearest sign of Jupiter as the thunder-god’s planet.
