She drew the sky they were named for
Sailor Moon is a 1991 manga by Naoko Takeuchi. Each planet has a schoolgirl guardian, named for the planet’s god. In this frontispiece Takeuchi put a real diagram of the celestial spheres at the centre of the ten guardians. The manga uses the planets’ names and is built around their chart, which is why this site has a wing for it.
There are ten guardians, one for each planet, and each is named both for her planet and for the god the planet was named after. Takeuchi also wrote their characters to match those gods. Mars fights, Venus is the guardian of love, Mercury is quiet and studious, and Jupiter is tall and strong. Astrology reads the same planets and the same gods, with the Moon for feeling, Mars for drive, Venus for love and Mercury for the mind, and that is why a manga about schoolgirls is on a site about charts. The character pages in this wing set each guardian beside her planet, the myth behind it and the astrology attached to it.

Naoko Takeuchi was born in Kofu, in Yamanashi prefecture, on 15 March 1967. At school she joined the manga club and the astronomy club, and has said the astronomy club stayed with her. She went on to Kyoritsu College of Pharmacy, took a degree in chemistry, wrote a senior thesis on breaking up blood clots with ultrasound and qualified as a licensed pharmacist. While she studied she worked part-time as a shrine maiden at Shiba Daijingu, and she was drawing throughout.
Nakayoshi gave her its newcomer prize in 1985 and its New Artist award in 1986, when she was nineteen. Codename: Sailor V followed in 1991, and Sailor Moon began in Nakayoshi that December. It ran to 1997, sixty acts in eighteen volumes, and took the Kodansha Manga Award for shōjo in 1993. She reads astrology, mythology and the esoteric, has said she believes in astrology, and when she built the team she gave each guardian a planet. She is still drawing them.

↑ back to the arcsthe same story told again in a comic, a cartoon, two dubs, a live-action series, a stage musical and a fighting game, each one differing from the one before.

This is the one that came first. Minako had her own manga, running in RunRun from 1991, a year before Usagi did, and Sailor Moon began as an answer to the question of what a whole team of her would look like. In Sailor Moon, Venus is the fifth guardian and turns up late. Read afterwards, this manga shows her as the one who had been doing it alone the whole time.

Naoko Takeuchi, in Nakayoshi, 1991 to 1997, and eighteen volumes in its first collected edition. It is faster, stranger and much sadder than the cartoon. The astrology is drawn instead of implied, and the guardians spend far less time being funny. Everything else on this list grew out of it.

Toei, 1992 to 1997, five seasons and roughly two hundred episodes. This is what most English speakers mean by Sailor Moon. It is also the loosest telling. Whole arcs are invented, the villains get inner lives the manga never gave them, and Usagi is allowed to be a much bigger idiot for much longer.

There are three films, R in 1993, S in 1994 and SuperS in 1995. Each one runs about an hour and is basically a very good long episode. The R film is the one people insist you watch. It is about Mamoru, a rose and a boy who was lonely first.

There are two, and they differ. DiC and later Cloverway renamed everyone, cut heavily and never reached Stars. Viz redubbed the whole series from 2014, uncut, with the names intact, and gave English speakers the final season for the first time.
The first dub also cut the last five episodes of season one, in which Usagi watches all four of her friends die and then walks on alone. Those episodes were missing from the English version for years.

Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, 2003 to 2004, forty-nine half-hour acts. It is the only telling that gives her an ordinary life that keeps going. She has a part-time job, a crush, homework and a destiny, and the series takes an interest in all four. It also invents an ending of its own.

The musicals ran to about thirty productions from 1993 and were revived from 2013. They are live stage shows in which an almost entirely female cast plays everyone, including the men, and fans can still sing the songs from memory decades later. It is the longest-running telling and the easiest to miss if you only ever watched.

2014, and a deliberate return to the manga after twenty years in which the anime had been the default. Usagi becomes competent sooner and there is less comedy. Whether that is an improvement is the longest-running argument in this fandom, and this page is not going to settle it.

Crystal finished in cinemas instead of on television. Eternal in 2021 took the Dream arc and Cosmos in 2023 took Stars, with two films each. They look almost nothing like the series before them, and in them the manga's ending is animated for the first time.
